The Value of a Smile

It costs nothing, but creates much.

It enriches those who receive, without impoverishing those who give.

It happens in a flash, and the memory if it sometimes lasts for ever.

None are so rich they can get along without it, and none so poor but are richer for its benefits.

It creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in a business, and is the countersign of friends.

It is rest to the weary, daylight to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and Nature's best antidote for trouble.

Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is no earthly good to anybody till it is given away!

Love Letters of the Famous

Elizabeth Browning

When our two souls stand up
    erect and strong,
Face to face, silent, drawing
    nigh and nigher,
Until the lengthening wings
    break into fire
At either curved point,
    - what bitter wrong
Can the earth do us,
    that we should not long
Be here contented! Think. In
    mounting higher,
The angels would press on us
    and aspire
To drop some golden orb of
    perfect song
Into our deep, dear silence. Let us stay
Rather on earth, Beloved - where
    the unfit
Contrarious moods of men recoil away
And isolate pure spirits, and permit
A place to stand and love in for a day...

Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861)

Edgar Allan Poe

Yes, I now feel that it was then on that evening of sweet dreams - that the very first dawn of human love burst upon the icy night of my spirit. Since that period I have never seen nor heard your name without a shiver half of delight, half of anxiety.... For years your name never passed my lips, while my soul drank in, with a delirious thirst, all that was uttered in my presence respecting you.

Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849)

Michel de Montaigne

If I am pressed to say why I loved him, I feel it can only be explained by replying: "Because it was he; because it was me."

Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592)

F. Scott Fitzgerald

I fell in love with her courage, her sincerity, and her flaming self-respect and it's these things I'd believe in even if the whole world indulged in wild suspicions that she wasn't all she should be.... I love her and that's the beginning of everything.

F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940)

James Joyce

... I love you. I cannot live without you. I would like to give you everything that is mine.... telling you more and more until we grew to be one being together until the hour should come for us to die. Even now the tears rush to my eyes and sobs choke my throat as a I write this.... bear with me a little even if I am inconsiderate and unmanageable and believe me we will be happy together. Let me love you in my own way. Let me have your heart always close to mine to hear every throb of my life, every sorrow, every joy.

James Joyce (1882-1941)

Thou art my life

Thou art my life, my love, my heart,
    The very eyes of me:
And hast command of every part,
To live and die for thee.

Robert Herrick (1591-1674)

Happiness Quotes

Divide your joy

Grief can take care of itself, but to get the full value of a joy you must have somebody to divide it with.

Mark Twain (1835-1910)

Mystical law

There is a wonderful, mystical law of nature that the three things we crave most in life - happiness, freedom, and peace of mind - are always attained by giving them to someone else.

Unknown

Aristotle

Happiness itself is sufficient excuse. Beautiful things are right and true; so beautiful actions are those pleasing to the gods. Wise people have an inward sense of what is beautiful, and the highest wisdom is to trust this intuition and be guided by it. The answer to the last appeal of what is right lies within a person's own breast. Trust thyself.

Aristotle (384-322 BC)

Talk Happiness

Talk happiness. The world is sad enough.
Without your woe. No path is wholly rough.

Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850-1919)

Solitude

I find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time. To be in company, even with the best, is soon wearisome and dissipating. I love to be alone. I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude. We are for the most part more lonely when we go abroad among men than when we stay in our chambers. A man thinking or working is always alone, let him be where he will. Solitude is not measured by the miles of space that intervene between a man and his fellows. The really diligent student in one of the crowded hives of Cambridge College is as solitary as a dervish in the desert.

Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)

Dolly Parton

The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.

Dolly Parton, b.1946

Greatest Glory

Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.

Confucius (551-479 BC)

Believe It!

Believe that life is worth living and your belief will help create the fact.

William James (1842-1910)

Highest Aspirations

Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead.

Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888)

Religious

Born Again

Beautiful butterfly, joyfully free,
no longer awkward or earthbound be;
the way it was changed
tells what has happened to me.

The image of the butterfly
born again and made new;
I accepted Jesus;
now I am born again too.

The old me is gone,
my spirit is new;
the change that took place
I owe all to you.

It didn't take long, an instant or so;
you are with me, Lord Jesus, wherever I go:
the change was complete, now I am free,
made in his image, a follower I'll be.

The story's not over, the work incomplete;
I have to tell others, whoever I meet:
accept the Lord Jesus, open your heart;
like the butterfly, you will have a new start.

`I tell you most solemnly, unless a man is
born again, he cannot see the kingdom
of God.'

John 3:3

Give me a light

I said to the man who stood at the gate of the Year, `Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.' And he replied, `Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way!'

Footprints

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; one belonged to him, and the other to the LORD.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it. "LORD, you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me."

The LORD replied, "My precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."

Fungus Despair

Indeed it is well said!

Indeed it is well said, in every object there is inexhaustible meaning; the eye sees in it what the eye brings means of seeing -- Carlyle

Fresh drop of snot

But then I came to Wicked Moon
The answer was right there!

Just how much I care
So as you read the little card

Be my Valentine

Some people put their feelings into little, fancy boxes
They give big bouquets of roses
Or yummy, creamy chockies
Some people hire aeroplanes to write across the sky
And others pay for telegrams that sing - don't ask me why
But me, I'm just a simple soul
With feelings pure and fine
So I'll just say, "I love you, please be my Valentine"

I found a special person in you

Every now and again a person comes along whose beauty owes nothing to the outer form.

That person shines with a loveliness which comes from the inside.

You know instinctively that you can rely upon them; they are a friend in the true sense of that word.

They would defend you to the last; help you at any time and never count the cost; continue to love you, whatever you did; give you their last possession if you were in need.

Not everyone is privileged to meet such a person in their lifetime but I have found that special person in you.

I care for you

Some guys find it easy
To say romantic stuff
But me, I just get tongue-tied
When I have to speak of love.
So you may feel that I don't care
But darling, that's not true
And so I send this card to say
How much I care for you

When no one else seems to have the time
You're always there for me

You're a very special person
I'm so glad that you're my mother

May calm be spread around you

Kia hora te marino, kia whakapapa pounamu te moana,
Kia tere karohirohi i mua i tou huarahi.

May calm be spread around you, may the sea glisten like greenstone and the shimmer of summer dance across your path.

Famous Maori saying

The following isn't necessarily something you would send to a religious person. Maori say prayer (karakia) before every event, it isn't always a Christian thing but often to an ancient Maori god.

God bless your birthday

Ma te Atua to huritau e manaaki mana,
hoki e hoatu ki a koe te hari koa mo te tau katoa.

May God bless your birthday and give you happiness throughout the whole year.

The love between us

Kia rite ta taua aroha
Ki te tai o te moana
Ki te mahana o te ra
Me te kahurangi o te ata

May the love that is between us remain as constant as the tide,
as warm as the sun and as precious as the morning.
